Please note that the laws regarding golf carts are referring to your personally owned vehicle, not the carts made available by the Pro Shop. You can visit any Arizona Motor Vehicles Division office to register your golf cart and get a license plate. The MVD nearest to SSV is in Apache Junction at 575 N. Idaho Road just north of Apache Trail (State Route 88).

 

Golf carts, small, four-wheel vehicles used to travel from one part of a golf course to another, can be driven on public roads. Arizona law treats these carts as motor vehicles, requiring all drivers to have a valid drivers license and to register the golf cart, mount and display in a conspicuous position it's license plate provided by the AZ MVD and carry liability insurance. In addition, Arizona limits the use of golf carts to roads with a speed of less than 35 miles per hour to comply with federal standards requiring speed limits on these vehicles with exceptions for NEV's (Neighborhood Electrical Vehicles).

 

Insurance Requirement
Arizona law requires motor vehicle operators, including golf cart operators, to carry liability insurance on their vehicles. As of August, 2010, minimum liability insurance requirements are $10,000 in property damage and $15,000 in bodily injury. If a golf cart operator is caught driving without insurance, the Arizona Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) can suspend his driver's license and require him to carry SR-22 insurance for three years.

 

Federal law says that each state, including Arizona, can make its own laws regarding golf carts only if the golf carts are incapable of exceeding speeds of 25 miles per hour. Thus, golf carts may not be manufactured that are capable of exceeding this speed or modified to go faster than 25 miles per hour. To comply with this regulation, Arizona sets a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour for golf carts and bans them from roads with a speed limit higher than 35mph. If your golf cart is classified as an NEV (Neighborhood Electrical Vehicle) the speed limits are different. Generally speaking, if the speed limit is 45 miles per hour, your cart must be able to go at least 10 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit (35mph). If the posted speed limit is 50mph, your NEV must be able to go 40mph, which none of them do, without illegal modifications. ​This law keeps slow moving vehicles from operating on high speed roads. 

 

The Arizona MVD requires golf cart owners to register their vehicles and obtain a license plate to display on the golf cart. Golf carts must have working headlights, brake lights and a horn. Golf carts are exempt from the Arizona requirement that all motor vehicles must have a windshield.

While we have street signs advising solicitors that our community is a "No Soliciting" community, you must have a sign stating "No-Soliciting" on your property or house for it to be a crime for solicitors to ring your door bell or knock on your door. The following is the law as stated on the City of Mesa's website.

 

Solicitors must obey “No Soliciting” signs: 5-8-11: UNLAWFUL ACTS: It shall be unlawful for any peddler, solicitor, canvasser, or transient merchant in the course of business to ring the doorbell or knock at any building whereon a sign bearing the words "No Peddlers or Solicitors" or similar wording is exposed to public view.
