Bill Harrison Presents: FLOOD
Rugged mountains, steep canyons, and dry streambeds are all part of the reason
Arizona has a colorful history of powerful, destructive, and unfortunately, deadly floods.
In the early days of the Arizona Territory, small mining communities grew up
along creeks and rivers to have access to water, and to be near the mines in the nearby foothills.
When heavy, seasonal rains cascaded down the steep mountain slopes, settlements
were at the mercy of the raging waters. Their homes, businesses, livestock, and on numerous occasions, their lives, were lost.
This is the story of three kinds of floods that have dramatically affected Arizona:
flash floods that roar down placid creeks and streams,
floods caused very swollen rivers overflowing their banks
and the most devastating flood in the history of Arizona,
the collapse of the Walnut Grove Dam near Wickenburg in 1890 that killed more than 100 people.

Bill Harrison Presents:
Arizona War Heroes
Thousands of young men and women from Arizona have stepped forward in time of war to serve in the armed forces of the United States. None saw themselves as special, only Americans doing their patriotic duty. However, some of these individuals discovered an inner strength when faced with impossible situations and certain death. They didn't give up or give in. They fought on with stubborn determination that would later be described as extraordinary and heroic. Lieut. Frank Luke, Jr., was an ace pilot and “balloon buster” in World War I. In the trenches of that same war Marine Cpl. John Pruitt fought with ferocious determination. Army Pfc. Silvestre Herrera and Sgt. Manuel Mendoza demonstrated incredible courage and valor in World War II. Ensign John Butler was a naval aviator who flew fearlessly at the Battle of Midway. Capt. Raymond Harvey gallantly led his men to victory in Korea. Marine Capt. Jay Vargas boldly faced overwhelming odds in Vietnam. This is the remarkable story of seven men who sacrificed for America's freedom.

Bill Harrison Presents: Stepping Stone to the Moon Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. For eight years, astronauts had learned about the challenges of space travel during the breathtaking excitement of the Mercury and Gemini Missions. But going to the moon required critical information the astronauts hadn't studied - geology. This is the remarkable story of the Apollo Astronauts who came to Arizona to study geoscience at Meteor Crater near Winslow, the Grand Canyon and at the San Francisco Volcanic Fields. It's also the story of Eugene Shoemaker who established the Astrogeology Science Center in Flagstaff. Dr. Shoemaker wanted to replicate the surface of the moon to train astronauts and test equipment, so he created a lunar surface with high explosives at Cinder Lake, seven miles from Flagstaff. This presentation will not only revisit an incredibly exciting time in America, it will also make you proud of Arizona and its involvement in the “Space Race.” |

USO Show
Founded during World War II, the USO sought to be the GI's “home away from home” and began a tradition of entertaining the troops and providing social facilities. Here in SSV the Veterans’ Club has taken the USO Show to a whole different level. Using community and local talent, the show is interspersed with clips from the original Bob Hope USO Shows across the world. There’s usually a band, dancing, singing, skits, instrumentalists, and more. It’s always a great time and a good excuse to laugh at your friends and neighbors brave enough to make fun of themselves. During the evening several veterans will be honored with a Quilt of Thanks made by the TAC quilters

Ben Johnson An Awfully Nice Fella
There was a time in America when every cinema screen offered Western movies filled with exciting, heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action! Larger than life cowboy heroes spit in the eye of death every Saturday morning to entertain us with their daring bravado. However, very few of those actors actually threw a punch, fell off a horse, or escaped a burning building – a stunt-double was paid to take the lumps and bruises. Beginning in 1939, a young man appeared in dozens of Westerns, but as a stunt-double he never received credit for his remarkable talents. His name was Ben Johnson. Ben was a man of principle who believed in the values of honesty, realism, and respect. He forged a successful career in the film industry, first as a stuntman, then a brilliant and beloved actor. Ben’s career lasted more than 50 years, with many highs and lows, but through it all he stayed true to the Cowboy Code. When he won an Academy Award for The Last Picture Show in 1972, he took the stage and, in his typical “aw shucks” way, said, “This couldn’t have happened to a nicer fella.” This is an outstanding presentation about one of the really good guys of Hollywood!

COLOSSUS Building Hoover Dam
The grandeur of Hoover Dam draws millions of visitors each year. Honored as a monumental engineering feat, the dam was created in one of the most inhospitable locations on the planet. For nearly five years, thousands of men toiled in unrelenting heat, blowing sand and suffocating dust to build this modern colossus. A massive dam was needed to dominate the powerful and unpredictable Colorado River. Each spring the mighty river, engorged with vast amounts of rain and melted snow, rampaged across seven Western states, flooding farmland, destroying homes and businesses, and taking hundreds of lives. Built during the depths of the Great Depression, Hoover Dam became a symbol of American resilience and ingenuity in the face of crisis, putting thousands of men to work and bringing the unruly Colorado River to heel. An outstanding presentation about one of the engineering wonders of modern history.

Bill Harrison Presents: Grand Canyon Railroad The Little Train that Delivers the World to the Grand Canyon There was a time when the Grand Canyon was a natural oddity known only to Native Americans, courageous explorers, solitary prospectors and intrepid tourists. That all changed in 1901 when the Grand Canyon Railroad delivered the first passengers to the South Rim of the canyon. Presidents, kings, movie stars and millions of visitors would soon follow! This is the remarkable story of the tenacious people, monumental trials and tribulations and the epic triumphs that eventually brought a train to the Grand Canyon. From its early years of transporting mineral ore and livestock, to the present-day nostalgic journey to the heart of the canyon, the Grand Canyon Railroad has enchanted millions of people from around the world. This is also the fascinating story of El Tovar, the majestic hotel built by the Fred Harvey Company on the lip of the Grand Canyon. For more than 100 years, El Tovar has provided train passengers with exceptional service and first-class accommodations at one of the most spectacular and unforgettable locations on Earth. |

Creature Features!
The Golden Age of Horror Movies!
The 1950s were the golden age of horror movies. “Creature features” terrorized audiences, especially teenagers, who wanted to be thrilled, chilled, and scared out of their wits! It didn’t matter if grotesque monsters were created by mad scientists, mutated by deadly radiation, or unearthed from ancient graves, they all caused spine-tingling and hair-raising screams of delight! Theaters used creative and sometimes bizarre promotional stunts as well as tantalizing advertisements to generate excitement about horror movies. Midnight Spook Shows were also enormously popular across America. Magicians, mentalists, and Spiritualists created programs filled with creepy lights, eerie sounds, bloody dismemberments, and unchained beasts! For more than 20 years, the Fabulous Fox West Coast Theater in downtown Phoenix offered Midnight Spook Shows. Some of the top performers in the country came to Arizona to provide thrills and chills to a generation of fans! This is a fun Halloween presentation!

Bill Harrison Presents: Navy V-12 Program Creating Leaders to Win a War The United States Navy wasn’t prepared for World War II. Hundreds of ships had to be built, and thousands of trained and qualified naval officers were needed. In 1943, the Navy V-12 Program was established by the War Department on 131 university campuses to provide a continuous supply of college educated and trained naval officers. More than 60,000 young men between the ages of 18 and 24 were accepted into the Navy V-12 Program. These men were challenged mentally and physically to prepare them for leadership roles. The trainees were required to successfully pass more than two years of difficult classes in engineering, math, calculus, chemistry, geometry, physics, and English. Graduates of the program were commissioned ensigns in the Naval Reserve. Northern Arizona Teachers College in Flagstaff was the only school selected in Arizona to host a V-12 Program. The school graduated more than a thousand young men who proudly served their country during the war. |

Prescott, Arizona
“Everybody’s Hometown”
For more than 160 years, this vibrant community north of Phoenix in the cool Bradshaw Mountains has been welcoming visitors as if they were family! Prescott was the first Arizona Territorial Capital in 1867. The boomtown offered 50 rowdy saloons that entertained thousands of rawhide-rough cowboys, crusty miners, notorious outlaws, and famous lawmen. Today, Prescott is a charming, cultured and artistic community with more than 50,000 residents. Each year dozens of events are enjoyed on the verdant lawn of the Yavapai County Courthouse. In addition to the annual Frontier Days Rodeo, Prescott was honored in 1989 as the official Christmas City of Arizona. No visit to Prescott would be complete without touring the historic Elks Opera House. First opened in 1905, the venue served the community for more than a century. The new Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center reopened in 2012 after eight years of restoration. The colorful history, dynamic people, unique architecture, boutique shopping, and the picturesque beauty of this Northern Arizona gem, will be enjoyed by everyone!
